HappinessArticle By Tom Marcoux, America's Communication CoachBarry Neal Kaufman, best-selling author of Happiness Is A Choice speaks of happiness as a state of feeling grateful and having no questions. Remember a time when you felt you were in the right place at the right time. At that moment, I imagine you had no questions. I remember, holding the hand of my sweetheart running to her car. We were happy because we wanted to be together - and we just figured out that we could be together longer - by driving together from San Francisco to San Jose. I was due to return to the movie set to direct night scenes. We were grateful to be together. We had no questions because we knew we belonged together. I remember, my first kiss with my sweetheart - we were in a garage (I have had a thing about garages ever since...). I remember NOW - this moment - in which I write this. I am grateful for this laptop computer and the terrific music I am listening to. Make A Shift For Happiness Here is a method to take you into a happy moment. Focus on these words "I am grateful for…" Then, list 10 things/experiences/people you are grateful for. Make It A Game You Can Win When working with my coaching clients, I help them discover their personal ways to nurture themselves and create a process to "Make it a game they can win." Perfectionists set up a game they cannot win. Instead, you can create beliefs that help you enjoy each day. For example, one of my clients says, "Any day when I help someone is a successful day." That is a belief that supports this person to "win" on a daily basis. Threads Of Happiness Happiness is a big topic, and I devoted half of my book Communicate to Win to this topic with the section "You Deserve to Be Happy." About happiness, let's look on it as a process of interweaving threads. In my motion picture "LIVING," the main character learns that happiness and fulfillment do NOT come from one thing: music, a person or anything. It is many threads: love relationships, creativity, contribution to others, fun, forgiveness, renewal after tears, and more. Happiness is found in being grateful for what you're experiencing now…AND doing today for joy tomorrow. It is a balancing act.
