Women Who Feel Great About Themselves

Article by Tom Marcoux, America's Communication Coach

As America's Communication Coach and a Board Member of WomenSpiritAwakening.com, I interview women who create lives of balance and fulfillment. As the co-author of Women's Spirit Awakening, I am known as a champion of women embracing their power. For women to feel great about themselves, it helps to use a W.I.N. process. Here is the acronym that we use:

W - Weekly
I - Integrity
N - Nurturing

Weekly

Many women discover that they feel overwhelmed and stressed out with twenty items on their to-do list for the day. The secret is to avoid jamming up each day; instead we spread important activities over the week. Thursday night can include the ritual of getting together with friends; and Saturday morning can include the ritual of a one-on-one breakfast with one's daughter. Lynda Obst, movie producer of SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, told me that she uses the powerful strategy of "Next!" When something is not going well, she has multiple projects or things that bring her comfort. She said that writing brings her balance. Each week, a vital way to restore balance is to create times for humor and laughter. Lynda's friend Nora Ephron, director of SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, had a unique response when someone rejected her script. An executive said, "Don't take this personally." Nora responded, "How should I take it? As a group?" From Lynda's comments, we are inspired to use a personal journal and to create laughter by making time for friends and, perhaps, humorous home video movies.

Integrity
Integrity refers to feeling whole. My personal/professional coaching clients use Solo-Actions and a Self-Leadership Chart to bring more happy moments to their days. Solo-Actions are activities you can do to nurture yourself: painting, going for a walk, reading an uplifting book or listening to a relaxation audiotape. The Self-Leadership Chart is a process for noting Solo-Actions, truly appreciating how you support others and rewarding yourself for that you do well. Part of the integrity process is to value ourselves. Susan RoAnne, best-selling author of How to Work a Room, told me that "Knowing what I know now about the publishing industry…when my book was in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL and USA TODAY, I would have tripled my fees." What we learn from her comment is that it is helpful to notice the real value that you offer others. Once again, a personal journal helps.

Nurturing
In my presentations for women's networking associations, I emphasize ways of communicating so we create more rapport and closeness with people in our lives. In that way, we are nurturing the relationships. We also need to nurture ourselves and our inner child. Marcia Wieder, Best-selling author of Making Your Dreams Come True, told me, "I'm big on nurturing myself when I feel wounded -- with a massage, a facial or [talking with a friend]. Instead of turning all my energy into working and repressing the feeling, I just let myself really feel the sadness. And then, at some point, I find the dream that will move me out of where I am, to where I want to be."

Weekly Integrity Nurturing is a process of discovering your needs, valuing what you do and nurturing yourself. We need to remember to "fill our tanks" so we can continue our loving and giving ways with others.
